ジネプリ（パイロット・ペン）
８月２０日。ニューヘイブン（米コネチカット州）。ロビー・ジネプリ（米）がミーシャ・ズベレフ（独）に６１、３６、１６で３回戦敗退。
言い訳：
●「ウイニングショットを打ちまくっていて、１００％すべてうまくいっていたのに。いくつかのポイントでかなり厳しい状況になったときに多分ちょっと慌てはじめてしまって。」："I was hitting everything for a winner and everything was going 100 percent my way. When the match kind of got tight in a couple of points, I started to panic maybe a little bit."
●「この４５日間は全米に備えてジムできついトレーニングをしてきました。この大会で数試合はやりたかったですし、まだフィットネス・レベルを調整しているところです。」："I've been working pretty hard in the gym the last 4-5 days to get ready for the U.S. Open. I wanted to get a couple matches in and still maintain my fitness level."
●「こんなふうに負けるのは辛いものですが、この大会に出て必要なことはやりましたから。試合の終わらせ方にはちょっとがっかりしていますけれど。頑張ってもう少し激しく競えればよかったとは思います。この負けはすぐにでも乗り越えますよ。」："It hurts to lose a match like this but I came in here and did what I needed to do. I'm a little bummed out about the way I finished the match. I wish I hung in there and competed a little harder. I'll be over it pretty quick."
●「ベースラインでプレーするところから始めはしましたが、第一セットではサーブ＆ボレーもしてすべてのショットが自分の思うとおりになりました。そのあとから試合内容が厳しくなってきて少し慌てだしてしまいましたから。」："I just started staying back a little more, I was serve-and-volleying in the first set and hitting everything for a winner and everything was going my way. Then the match got tight at a couple points and I started maybe to panic a little bit."
●「もしも来週全米でプレーするなら、再戦を楽しみにしています。」："If we play next week, I'll look forward to a rematch with him."
▼クレーコートの科学者・ヒゲラスにコーチしてもらうようになってちょうど１年▼数ヶ月前からDiego Moyano（アルゼンチン）も共同コーチとして参加。Moyanoがアメリカ人選手について興味深いことを言ってます▼“The main thing is he can play his game in grass or in clay but still can play like Robby Ginepri. He cannot play like a Spanish player or another player, but he can “be him, play like he likes to play.”▼“He should respect a few things, a few clay-court things. American men tend to stand on the baseline and play with their hands, when on clay they ought to emphasize movement more than on hard courts and play with their feet. If stuck far behind the baseline, they should play a high ball, not a flat ball."▼先週レッドクレーで練習したのでこうした言葉には実感です。日本にもアメリカにもグローバルスタンダードなクレーコートが必要なのかもしれませんね。
