４月５日。フロリダ州キービスケイン。エレナ・ヤンコビッチがセリーナ・ウイリアムスに1-6、7-5、3-6で優勝を逃しました。
言い訳：
●「（第三セットの0-1でセリーナのサーブ）１５－４０の場面で簡単なボールもあったのにミスしてしまいました。プレー中にちょっと叫んでいる女性がいたのを覚えているんですけど、どういうわけだかあのときボールに集中しなかった。」："You know, I had easy balls, you know, to go up 1540, and I missed that shot.There was a lady who was little bit screaming during the point, and I lost, somehow, my focus on that shot."
●「ええ、今週ずっと風邪でしたからね。本当にこれはいらつくものです、決勝戦ですよ。今日はとても弱々しくて、呼吸もろくに出来ないくらい。でも、このことについて考えないようにしましたよ。ただ試合してそれを楽しもうとトライしました。」："Yeah, I was sick.You know, it was so really annoying for me to be sick, you know, and playing a final.I felt little bit weak today.I felt I couldn't breathe. But I didn't I tried not to think about this.I tried just to play the game and just enjoy it and have fun."
●「コートではちょっとふらふらし始めたときもありましたね、鼻をかもうとすると耳がポコッとまるで飛行機に乗っているときみたいにね。そんな感じでしたが、これは気持ちよくない、こんな状態で何が出来るって思いません？」："Yeah, I started to feel a little bit dizzy in the court, light headed like when I blow my nose my ears were popping like when you're on the airplane.That's how it feels.It's uncomfortable, but what can I do?"
●「もう咳ばっかり、これトーナメント中ずっとですよ。これって変なもので（笑）。決勝に勝ち上がるためにそれでもベストを尽くさなければならなかったんですから。」："I kept coughing and coughing, and I coughed my way through the tournament.It was really weird.(laughter.)I had to do I had to do my best in order to be here."
●「終盤でも挽回するチャンスもあったのにと思いましたよ。5-4であのゲームをとっていれば、挽回するチャンスについててなにも考えることもなかったでしょうけれどね。」："I thought I could come back at the end.You know, if I had won that game at 54, I didn't think that could have happened.It was unlucky for me, but next time."
●「試合中に思っていたのですが、、この試合ってまるで「White Girls Can't Play」（映画「White Men Can't Jump」(邦題「ハード・プレイ」をもじって）。お分かりですよね。」："I was feeling when I was playing that match, I thought, White Girls Can't Play, you know."
●「第三セットの1-5、2-5で良いプレーしたポイントがありました。凄いショットも打ちましたし、3-5のときは風下にあってただ大変でしたね。あのとき考えたんですけど、あのゲームをとって4-5とすればコートチェンジで風上に移れる、そうなれば随分と違ってくるだろうと。でも残念ながら、彼女はすごいハードヒットしてきてうまくいったから、あのときはベースラインにいただだけだったけどボールを返すことも出来ませんでした。」："I played some great points at 51 and 52.I hit great shots, but and then I was against the wind at 53 and it was just hard.I thought, you know what?If somehow I can pull that game out and then be 54 and then I'm over there with the wind, it would make a big difference. But, unfortunately, she was hitting really hard and gave it all, and I was just in the back and couldn't get those balls back."
●「（セリーナのプレーの印象について）、やれやれすごいな、ああもうただ決めて、でもあっちの方にしてって感じでしたね。あんなすごいウインニングショットが体の近くにくるのだけは勘弁してほしいし、どこか他所にお願いしますと思ってました。いやもうただ、、うーんそうですね、、ウイニングショット打って、すごい雄叫び。カモーン！とか言ってましたけどね。それが彼女に対するイメージかしら、ええ。なるべく彼女を見ないようにしましたよ。自分に集中しようとトライしましたから。」："It feels like, I would say, Oh, my God.Just hit a winner, but away from me.I don't want to see that ball near my body or anywhere else.It's just and after, when she, you know okay, she hits a winner, but then she screams so loud.She says, Come on. It's just it's like the whole image, you know.I try not to look at her.I just try to focus on myself."
●「ただすさまじいパワーで、、、自分がどう感じたかっていうとまるでヘビー級チャンピオンとフェザー級チャンピオンの対戦みたいでしたね。」："Just amazing power. It's and I felt, you know how I felt, to be honest, it's like heavyweight champion and I'm a feather champion, you know?"
●「サービスの確立が高ければもう出来ることは無いですね。もしもサーブの方向を読めて、予測がかなり出来てボールに届いたとしてもかなり難しい、結局ボールが着地してからしか分からなかったような感じでした。ほんとに大変。」："If she has a good percentage there's nothing I can do. Even though I may be I can read the side and I go and I anticipate very well and I get the ball, but I get it in the service box. It's hard."
●「ま、（彼女との対戦は）こんなものなのではないですか。これまでに彼女には３回勝っているので、これで３勝３敗。お手柔らかに、、というところですよ、つまり、全豪では私が勝って、ここマイアミでは彼女にとってはタイトル防衛戦だったと（笑）。これからはヨーロッパに移りますからクレーの大会、今度は彼女を迎え撃つわけで、楽しいですね。」："That's just the way it is, and I I won against her like three times before, and now it's 3All. I had to be nice, you know. I beat her in Australia, so I had to be nice and let her defend her title. (laughter.) I'll be waiting for her in one of the clay tournaments when we play in Europe and I'll have more fans."
▼ひどい風邪の時のプレーに使えそうなフレーズいろいろでした。▼暴力テニスをする人と対戦するときの気持ちもヤンコビッチのように表現すると楽しいものになりますね。▼試合中にセリーナに叩き折られたラケットがかわいそうでした。ああいうのってウイルソンの担当の人はどんな気持ちで見ているんでしょう。またかよやれやれ、、といったところなんでしょうか。
